Very little is known about the mysterious figure known only as "Doctor Shadow". According to D.C. Smythe and Valerie Smith, he is an internationally wanted criminal mastermind and a certified genius, with a particular affinity for technology and political intrigue. Under the pseudonym "Asahi Yamamoto", he was the creator of the wildly popular (if flawed) "shadowCoin" cryptocurrency, having engineered the protocol to surreptitiously skim hidden "transaction fees" into his private wallets, if not empty other's wallets wholesale. When Fooker, Sharon, Trudy, and Stewart Johnson became trapped in Smythe's universe, they helped Smythe and Smith thwart Shadow's "shadowCoin" scheme, causing the cryptocurrency to collapse. Regrettably, Shadow and his henchmen Joe T. and Al E. Gator escaped before being apprehended.

First appearing in Jeff's original D.C. Smythe comics in 1986, Doctor Shadow remains one of Smythe's oldest recurring villains. Originally envisioned as a mysterious mad scientist who sometimes acted independently and sometimes in the employ of others, Shadow eventually morphed into a criminally genius mastermind and Smythe's chief antagonist. In a adversarial relationship similar to Holmes and Moriarty or Batman and the Joker, Smythe and Shadow are each other's greatest foil, seemingly forever locked in a battle of wits. (And yes, I do know what he looks like under that mask, but that's a secret to be revealed in another time and another place.)
