In Sharon's dream world of Harry Barker, Nermal is a short, pudgy boy with black hair in Harry's year at Hollerith's School of Phreaking and Hacking. Like Harry, he is in Torvalds Subnet. He is often the brunt of numerous practical jokes and bullying attempts, especially from the likes of Darco Mouso. His input device is apparently a trackball.

Nermal is the analog of Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter. "Shorttop" is just a negation of the two parts of Longbottom's name. Jeff chose "Nermal" for his first name in "honor" of Garfield's obscenely cute nemesis.
