First Appearance (Mrs. Oshiro): Surreptitious Machinations, Chapter 5: Random Threads (May 6, 2002); First Appearance (Mr. Oshiro): Gochisosama Deshita (September 18, 2004)

When Nick finally decided the time was right for him to propose to Ki, he decided that he needed to meet her parents first. Since they both come from very traditional backgrounds, he decided he must appeal to their cultural heritages. Ki's mother hails from Hong Kong and is fluent in Cantonese with a decent command of English. Ki's father is originally from Tokyo and is apparently retired. They each came independently to the United States years ago to attend college, during which time they broke from their more traditional backgrounds and embraced Western culture. Eventually, they met, fell in love, and got married. After deciding to remain the States, they had their children Ki and Yoshi.

Ki's mother tends to be warm and friendly, and is well known for her hospitality. She shows her more traditional roots by remaining at home and deferring to her husband on most matters. When she is scorned, however, she can have a fierce temper and is more than willing to stand up to anyone she disagrees with.

Mr. Oshiro, however, is a muddle of contradictions. Since his children were born, he has reverted further and further toward more traditional values, almost to the point of racism and sexism. His reactions to Nick indicate that he has a deep-rooted intolerance toward Caucasians seeking to date his daughter, which is perhaps a result of a very soured experience with one of Ki's old boyfriends. While Nick and Ki were eventually able to win her father over and get his blessing on their engagement, it is uncertain how Nick and Mr. Oshiro's relationship will eventually progress.
